Mick's Writing

Mick's book called War Transformed, was published by USNI books in February 2022. It explores change in the strategic environment such as geopolitics, technology, demographics and climate change. It also examines how institutions can respond to these challenges through new ideas, new organisational constructs and investing in their people. While primarily using a military context, the insights within are applicable to  commercial and government institutions.

The United States and China go to war when China invades the island of Taiwan. Deploying their most futuristic technologies in this grand strategic competition of the 21st century, the stakes could not be higher.
This fictional account views this future war through the eyes of the American, Chinese, and Taiwanese caught up in the maelstrom, revealing the heartbreak, courage, leadership, and despair of high-tech warfare played out on land, at sea, in space, and in cyberspace.

Futura Doctrina is my recently established Substack page, where I write about contemporary war and competition, as well as the technological and human aspects of these areas. Additionally, I explore issues related to the war in Ukraine, Chinese aggression against Taiwan and Indo-Pacific defence.

Mick has collaborated with authors from Australia and many other nations to contribute to several edited volumes over the past decade. These collaborations have explored contemporary leadership, competitive behaviour, management, strategy and organisational dynamics in a range of different settings.  The latest contribution, to which Mick provides a chapter and the Foreword, is a ground breaking exploration of the application of narratives and science fiction in building leaders and strategists.

Sometimes, institutions require detailed analysis to diagnose externally-driven challenges or internal dynamics, and to them propose workable solutions to these issues. Mick has written and delivered multiple reports and strategies that relate to institutional challenges, particularly with regards to education, training, technology and setting strategic direction.

The best senior leaders in Government and the private sector recognise that an improved institutional capacity for strategic thinking is required to navigate the challenges and opportunities of the 21st century.  The report provides a description of the current challenges to effective strategic thinking, such as definition, strategic culture, talent identification and development. It also explores potential solutions for how  institutions might respond.
